Shipping Coconut Charcoal as Dangerous Goods: UN 1361, IMDG Amendment 42-24 and SP 978 (2026)

Coconut charcoal is UN 1361 CARBON, Class 4.2 self-heating dangerous goods for sea transport. Since 1 January 2026, IMDG Amendment 42-24 removed the self-heating-test exemption: every charcoal container ships as declared dangerous goods under the conditions of Special Provision 978 — weathering, packing temperature and headspace — with a full dangerous goods declaration.
