Welcome to Charcoal Factory,
Matang / Kuala Sepetang, Taiping, Perak, Malaysia.
Since
1902, the area of 40,711 hectares of forest area which is divided into
three regions, namely Kuala Sepetang, Kuala Trong and Sungai Kerang
were managed according to "30 Year Work Plan" prepared by the Perak
State Forestry Department. After an area is harvested, new mangrove
trees are planted and this area will not touched then for 30 years.
Matang has become a major producer of charcoal, firewood and wood piles
for local and overseas markets. Mangrove tree species most abundant
available here are Rhizophora apiculata and Rhizophora mucronata. The
species Rhizophora apiculata is used to make charcoal.
Charcoal manufacturing industry in Kuala Sepetang is the flesh and
blood of the local residents since the 1930s. This tradition is not
surprising since this coastal fishing village is surrounded by the
mangrove forests.
After nearly eight decades, Kuala Sepetang charcoal is considered one
of the best in Asia. In fact, it was still in high demand in the
international market.
One charcoal factory that you must visit belongs to Mr. Chuah Chow Aun.
He is the 2nd generation in the family who owned the factory since
1930s. He is a gifted story teller who is fluent in multi-lingua such
as English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and various Chinese dialects. It
is hard not to listen to his intense explanations of the charcoal
making process.
Mr. Chuah can be contacted at
+6012 5739563 for an appointment for a guided tour of the factory.
